Idol Chatter: Candid commentary on American Idol performances
Idol Chatter: Top Stories & Community Feed
  • The Top 8 Girls: The summary
Faced with what Simon Cowell said might be the most important night of their careers, coming so close to the finals, several of American Idol's top eight women seemed to falter. Katie Stevens finally found her youthful song in Kelly Clarkson's Breakaway, then didn't anything with it. Paige Miles felt the emotion in Charlie Chaplin's Smile, a song she chose because of Michael Jackson's version, but the emotion showed in her voice, not in her performance.
  • Lilly Scott 'Falls to Pieces' with Patsy Cline
I really like Lilly Scott, but, after three weeks, she clearly has a problem. Can't this woman find a song she likes that's less than 40 years old?
  • Crystal Bowersox give viewers 'One Reason' to vote
Crystal Bowersox trades in her acoustic guitar for an electric this week, throwing some tasty blues licks over Tracy Chapman's Give Me One Reason. She's still totally in folk-rocker-chick mode, but the electric's a nice touch -- if for no other reason than showing Casey James that she's ready to stand toe-to-toe with him if he keeps flashing his axe. She's getting better from week to week.
  • Does Paige Miles make the judges 'Smile'?
Paige Miles makes a 180 turn from last week's Kelly Clarkson cover. This week, she goes all torchy for Charlie Chaplin's Smile. She sounds a little too tentative, but there's something sweet about her performance. She's definitely staking out her territory, but she falters, and it comes off weak.
  • Would you love to love Didi Benami's Fleetwood Mac cover?
Didi Benami brings back her acoustic guitar, as she covers Fleetwood Mac's Rhiannon. She's got no other backing at the start of the song, so it's just her -- and it's pretty near captivating. She's back in the groove she lost last week. Didi keeps the arrangement simple -- a piano joins for the second verse and, eventually, some harmony singers come in. But it's a quiet, simple arrangement. Not a big note in the bunch, but it's a lovely performance, almost counterintuitive. Her best moment since Terrifi
  • Katelyn Epperly feels the earth move under her feet
Katelyn Epperly dips into the Carole King catalog for I Feel the Earth Move. It's a perfectly good version, but it's not particularly exciting. She's standing centerstage behind a Wurlitzer keyboard. She gets points for playing, sure, but she looks locked in when this song demands, well, more movement.
  • Lacey Brown has 'The Story' to tell
Lacey Brown sits at the edge of the stage, as she sings Brandi Carlile's The Story. It's a much better, much more in tune -- musically and aesthetically -- than previous weeks.
  • Siobhan starts 'House of the Rising Sun' a cappella
Siobhan gets her note ... and starts the song a cappella! (Shades of Bo Bice.) She's keeps pitch perfectly, so there's no adjustment at all when the guitar comes in for the second verse. She builds the song slowly, staying low for that second note. Third verse, she starts to build a little, play with the melody some, but you can tell she's still holding back. And then, suddenly, she's back down, with a quiet finish. An incredibly restrained performance.
  • Katie Stevens has problems breaking away from Kelly Clarkson
Katie Stevens keeps trying to find that younger sound the judges are looking for -- tonight, she's going with Kelly Clarkson's Breakaway. So far, the other contestants who've tried Kelly's songs -- Todrick Hall and Paige Miles -- haven't fared too well. Katie's Breakaway isn't anywhere near as good as those performances -- she's consistently just underneath the pitch. And it's dull as dishwater. Be interesting to see if the judges call her on it.
  • Tuesday Tidbits: Diana DeGarmo, Kris Allen, Danny Gokey and more
Diana DeGarmo and Ace Young begin their run in Hair tonight at New York's Al Hirschfeld Theatre.
  • David Archuleta's memoir bumped to June
The publication date of David Archuleta's memoir, Chords of Strength: A Memoir of Soul, Song and the Power of Perseverance, has been bumped to June 1. In a new interview with Shirley Halperin of the Los Angeles Times, David says he agrees with his critics who say he's too young to write a memoir. But, he adds, "a lot of people ask me questions about my life, and I thought this is a great way for me to finally explain how I managed to get to this point at a young age and why I’m still the way I am."
  • Danny Gokey album ranks third at iTunes for the week
Danny Gokey's My Best Days was the third best-selling album on iTunes last week, behind the Almost Alice compilation and Lifehouse's Smoke & Mirrors.
